Maria Philip Memorial All Kerala Debate Competition-Zonal and Final rounds

The All Kerala Maria Philip Memorial Debate Competition got a kick-start on Tuesday the 4th of March, 2014 by inaugurating the Central Zone Competition at Bharata Mata College by Rev. Fr. Dr. Varghese K. V., the Director at 10:00 am with enthusiastic participation of large number of teams from Women’s Colleges and B-Schools. 
The winners in the Central Zone are St. TeresasErnakulam. Maria Sebastian and Minna Jose were the members of the Teresian team. The second and third position went to teams from Bhavans Royal Institute of Management and Toc-H Institute of Management. While Rahul D. Nambiar and Sharon Rose Varkey were Bhavans team members, SafnaHabeeb and Vishnu Agikumar lead the Toc-H team.
The performance of all the teams were evaluated by a judging committee chaired by P.T. George, Senior General manager, V-Guard Industries, Prof. Mathew Mattom, Dr. P. Amalanathan, Director XIME and Dr. P. K. Abraham, Dean XIME.
Besides Central, other zones are South and North, which are scheduled on 6th Thursday, March 2014 at Assumption College Changanassery and on 18th March 2014, to be conducted at Providence College Kozhikode. Winners and first and second runners up from all three zones will compete at the Finals to be conducted on 9th of April, 2014 at XIME Campus KINFRA Hi- Tech Park, Kalamassery. The Zonal level winners will get Rs. 5,000/-, first and second runners up will get Rs. 3000/- and Rs. 2000/- respectively. The winners in the finals will be awarded a trophy and cash prize of Rs. 20,000/- and the runners up will be awarded Rs. 10,000/-. Besides, the Best Speaker will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 12,000/-.
All the finalists will be given certificates. This competition is started by Maria Philip Trust for bringing out debating and communication talents mainly from the girl students and in the initial years it was open only to students from women colleges as one of the major dreams of Maria while she lived, was empowerment of women. Subsequently the debate was open to B-School students, still insisting that the teams should be all girl or one girl- one boy thereby giving prominence for participation from girls. 
The organisers wish to inform that there are opportunities for students from North and South zones still, to enter the finals through North and South Zonal Competitions which are yet to take place.
